Je suis mère de 3 enfants. J’ai découvert l’association Alliance VITA il y a quelques années, au moment des débats sur la loi Claeys-Leonetti concernant les droits des malades et la fin de vie.
J’ai été très touchée par leur combat pour une meilleure prise en charge de la fin de vie, axée sur les soins palliatifs et l’accompagnement jusqu’au bout de la vie. Car pour moi, la vie est sacrée du début à la fin, et il est de notre devoir d’entourer avec humanité les personnes souffrantes.
C’est pourquoi je soutiens financièrement Alliance VITA chaque mois. Je salue leur engagement constant, notamment auprès des plus fragiles en fin de vie qui se sentent inutiles et demandent l’euthanasie par désespoir. Alliance VITA leur apporte une écoute bienveillante et leur redonne espoir.
Avec leur service SOS Fin de vie, ils accomplissent un travail remarquable. Ils promeuvent aussi les soins palliatifs, trop peu développés en France. Et ils alertent sur les dérives d’une société qui ne respecterait plus la vie des plus vulnérables.
Je continuerai à soutenir Alliance VITA, car nous devons construire une société plus fraternelle, qui n’abandonne personne au bord du chemin. Le combat pour le respect de la vie jusqu’à la mort naturelle en fait partie.
En tant que médecin, je suis très inquiet à l’idée d’une possible légalisation de l’euthanasie en France. Certains patients en phase terminale demandent à abréger leur épreuve, mais j’ai été souvent témoin que cette demande disparait quand leur douleur est prise en compte et soulagée. Légaliser l’euthanasie aurait des conséquences dramatiques sur notre pratique.
J’envisage de quitter la clinique si l’euthanasie est votée car je n’aurai pas le choix. Ma direction dit déjà qu’elle appliquera la loi. Aujourd’hui c’est déjà compliqué pour moi de bien prendre soin de certaines personnes qui ont fait la demande d’une sédation profonde et continue, sans raison médicale, que mes confrères ont acceptée.
J’ai prêté serment d’aider mes patients « sans nuire ni mal faire ». Donner délibérément la mort à un patient, même à sa demande, serait pour moi une transgression majeure de ce serment. Cela marquerait la fin de l’éthique médicale telle que nous la concevons depuis des siècles.
Plutôt que d’envisager cette solution radicale qu’est le suicide assisté, nous devrions d’abord nous battre pour développer l’accès aux soins palliatifs. Soulager la souffrance des patients en fin de vie, les entourer d’amour et de dignité : voilà la mission exaltante qui doit nous mobiliser.
Quand mamie est tombée malade, ça a été un choc pour toute la famille. Le docteur a dit qu’elle ne guérirait pas, qu’il ne lui restait plus beaucoup de temps. J’avais très peur à l’idée de la perdre, mamie est comme une deuxième maman pour moi.
Heureusement, mamie est restée positive. Elle voulait profiter au maximum du temps qu’il lui restait avec nous. On a passé plein de week-ends et de vacances ensemble. On regardait des albums photos en rigolant. Mamie me racontait des histoires de quand elle était petite.
Bien sûr, il y a eu des moments difficiles. Parfois la maladie faisait très mal à mamie et ça me rendait triste de la voir souffrir. Mais elle gardait le sourire pour me réconforter. Heureusement, on a trouvé les bons médicaments pour la soulager.
Le plus important pour moi était d’être là, à ses côtés. De lui montrer à quel point je l’aime. J’ai même séché l’école quelques jours avant la fin pour passer du temps avec elle.
Mamie est partie tranquillement un matin, pendant son sommeil. J’étais effondrée mais aussi soulagée qu’elle ne souffre plus. Je suis contente des moments qu’on a partagés. Son amour me portera toujours.
Je suis infirmière depuis 15 ans, dont 10 ans en soins palliatifs. J’ai choisi cette spécialité par vocation, pour accompagner les personnes en fin de vie et soulager leur souffrance, physique et morale.
La légalisation de l’euthanasie m’inquiète beaucoup. Elle risque de créer une pression supplémentaire sur les patients et les soignants. Certains patients pourraient se sentir coupables de rester en vie, ou devenir une « charge » pour leurs proches. Et nous, soignants, serions placés dans une position intenable : celle de devoir donner la mort à la demande.
Je suis angoissée pour le monde de la santé avec l’euthanasie qui arrive. J’ai peur de l’avenir, de la maltraitance. Et plus les soignants sont maltraités, plus ils maltraitent les patients.
Cela changerait complètement la nature de notre engagement, basé sur le soin et non le geste létal. J’ai peur que l’euthanasie devienne peu à peu une solution de facilité, plutôt que le dernier recours. Surtout si l’accès aux soins palliatifs n’est pas garanti partout.
Je ne remets pas en cause la souffrance de certains malades ; il faut d’abord apaiser leurs douleurs physiques ! Je pense donc qu’il faut développer l’accès aux soins palliatifs et renforcer les moyens humains plutôt que d’envisager une telle loi. Car donner la mort ne devrait jamais être considéré comme un soin.
J’ai 76 ans et je suis très malade : j’ai un cancer incurable. Je souffre beaucoup de le faire peser sur mes enfants. Même si je suis soigné pour mes douleurs, l’inconfort ne me quitte pas. Jour et nuit, j’ai l’impression que mon corps se dégrade de jour en jour. Je suis fatigué de me battre contre cette maladie.
J’ai donc commencé à envisager sérieusement de mettre fin à mes jours. Je ne vois pas l’intérêt de continuer à endurer ainsi. J’ai eu une belle vie, j’estime que mon heure est venue. Je ne veux pas être un poids pour ma famille.
J’en ai parlé à mon fils, qui m’a supplié de ne pas faire ça. Il m’a donné le numéro de SOS Fin de vie et m’a encouragé à les appeler avant de prendre une décision. J’étais réticent au départ, pensant que personne ne pourrait me faire changer d’avis.
Finalement, j’ai appelé SOS Fin de vie par désespoir. La personne qui m’a répondu a été d’une grande écoute. Elle ne m’a pas jugé, elle a entendu ma peine et mon désir d’en finir.
Petit à petit, en discutant avec elle, j’ai réalisé que j’avais encore des choses à vivre. J’ai des petits-enfants que j’aime par-dessus tout et qui ont encore besoin de moi. Même si je suis diminué, je peux encore leur apporter beaucoup.
Cette discussion m’a redonné goût à la vie. J’ai décidé de me battre et de profiter du temps qu’il me reste. Grâce à SOS Fin de vie, j’ai pu exprimer mon épuisement et trouver une oreille attentive, sans jugement. Je leur suis infiniment reconnaissant de m’aider à traverser cette épreuve.
Lorsque mon père a reçu son diagnostic de cancer en phase terminale, ce fut un choc pour toute la famille. Nous savions que ses jours étaient comptés, mais nous voulions profiter au maximum du temps qu’il nous restait avec lui.
Les derniers mois ont été remplis d’émotions, mais aussi de beaucoup de joie et d’amour. Nous avons organisé une grande fête pour ses 80 ans, réunissant tous ses amis et notre famille élargie. Mon père était tellement heureux de voir tout le monde réuni autour de lui une dernière fois.
Bien sûr, il y a eu des moments difficiles, lorsque la maladie le faisait souffrir. Mais dans l’ensemble, mon père est resté serein et les analgésiques et notre présence l’apaisaient. Il disait qu’il avait eu une belle vie, et qu’il était prêt pour son dernier voyage.
Le plus important pour nous était d’être présents, de l’entourer d’amour et de faire en sorte qu’il ne soit pas seul. Nous avons passé le plus de temps possible avec lui, en famille, à discuter et à partager nos meilleurs souvenirs.
Mon père nous a quittés paisiblement, entouré des siens. Je garde en mémoire ces derniers moments comme un cadeau précieux. Malgré la tristesse, je suis reconnaissante d’avoir pu l’accompagner jusqu’au bout, et de l’avoir vu s’éteindre apaisé et aimé.
